Latest update from Jacob:

Greetings Everyone,

I'm looking forward to fishing with you all tomorrow! This weather is great, I just hope we get a little sun on the water.

As far as necessary equipment is concerned, I would make sure to have the following: A hat, polarized sunglasses, 5-7 weight rod with matched reel/floating line, 9ft leader with flourocarbon tippet (2x - 3x is fine), glo-bugs/nymphs/streamers in sizes 8-10, split shot, plenty of water, camera. Strike indicators are optional. Some people have success with them in the deeper pools, but they can spook fish in shallow water.  I normally wear a long sleeve shirt and bring either plenty of sunblock or a uv buff.

I DO NOT normally fish with waders down there. I do, however, wear shoes that I don't mind getting wet in case I really need to chase after a fish. Some people wear their wading boots and that's ok. Be advised that the rocks are extremely slippery.

I have not replaced my phone as of yet (it succumbed to the LA River last week, ironically), but I will be at the meeting place ready to go a little before 7. Please let me know if you have additional questions.

See you tomorrow!

Jacob

Hi Clay,

I apologize for the delay. I sent my phone into the water the following morning and I've been without one since then. I hope to have it resolved by this weekend. Time for something waterproof!

We are going to meet at the Red Car River Park, just below Glendale Blvd. on Ferncroft Rd. I am attaching a map of the area. I think that 7AM is a good time to get there to find a place to park. It does start getting pretty hot down there so we might wrap things up by 10:30 or 11. If you could coordinate names and phone numbers for me before the outing, that would be awesome. I can reach out to everyone or they can get in touch with me here at the store 626-356-8000. My cell is 626-376-0655. Like I said, I hope to have it replaced by this weekend.

Let me know if you have any questions!

A few tips from Jacob Gorman from the Orvis shop, who will be introducing us to this unique fishery:

Local carp fishing in the LA River is a fun way to enjoy a morning on the water and I'm always thrilled when I can drive 20 minutes from my home and throw flies at a 20 or 30 inch fish.

I recommend a 5-7 weight rod with a weight forward floating line, a 9ft 3x fluorocarbon leader, an assortment of split shot and a handful of flies. A softer 5 weight can be a little clumsy throwing some rigs so I would make sure it has fast action.

I usually take a variety of glo-bug style flies in about a size 8 and also an few crayfish style bugs that have some weight to them. The glo-bugs I'm fishing are mostly chartreuse and/or yellow. It is important to approach the river stealthy like you would a trout stream and try to see some fish before you cast. Line control is also very important. A good pair of polarized glasses is needed to see the fish, of course, and I usually bring a UV Buff to keep the sun off of my face.

Getting there right before sun rise and staying a couple of hours is all you need. Fishing for carp has made me a better overall angler and I think you'll see a  benefit to taking some of these practices to other game fish.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers,
